The Feast of Mary’s Queenship

I am writing this “Corner” article on the evening of the August 22nd Memorial celebrating “The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary” honoring our parish patroness. We were greatly blessed by Bishop Estevez celebrating Mass here on Monday in anticipation and in honor of this Marian feast. As Mother of the Universal Church, we need to turn to her in these calamitous times. The readings from the Prophet Ezekiel (34:1-11) for today’s Marian Memorial seem almost mystically written to apply to the trial our Church is suffering through today. His prophetic words from the Lord, have an ominous and severe tone to them, serving out an admonishment to those of His shepherds who were deficient in caring for His sheep. I could not believe how fitting this reading is to the current malaise of poor shepherding by Church leaders.

Here are some excerpts from Ezekiel: “Woe to the shepherds of Israel who have been pasturing themselves! Should not shepherds, rather, pasture sheep?…You did not strengthen the weak nor heal the sick nor bind up the injured. You did not bring back the strayed nor seek the lost, but you lorded it over them harshly and brutally. So, they were scattered for lack of a shepherd, and became food for all the wild beasts…Thus says the Lord God: I swear I am coming against these Shepherds. I will claim my sheep from them and put a stop to their shepherding my sheep…I will save My sheep.” Very prophetic words.

As this homosexual prelate scandal proliferates let us be comforted by those prophetic words of our Lord, “I will save My sheep”…and… as regards His Holy Church, He assured us that “The gates of hell shall not prevail against it”. Has our faith in much of our Church leadership been fragmented? I would say so. However, please be mindful that there are a multitude of morally solid and courageous bishops and priests, who though tarnished by the scandal, are there doing their job as faithful shepherds guiding us through this nightmare.

On this feast of Mary’s Queenship, let us, if not already, be certain to prayerfully turn to her powerful and caring intercession. And, please add your Wednesdays and Fridays of Fasting and Prayer until year’s end…offered up in reparation for all the offenses, as well as for healing and healthy new growth, for our Church. Above all, do not let Satan (whose work this scandal represents) trick or cajole you into giving up on the practice of your Catholic faith.

There have always been, and there will always be, some scoundrels who infiltrate the ranks of the faithful…and, “Yes”…including the ranks of Church leadership, just like Judas Iscariot…but they will never prevail…even Popes have tried, and failed! Our beautiful Catholic faith, with all its uplifting precepts, tenets and all it’s happiness-preserving morals, is not changed one bit by the revelation of these scandalous actions and lack of action by leadership.

As I mentioned previously, the virtuous response to infidelity is fidelity (faithfulness). Let this not shake our faith in God, or the teachings of His Church. We must faithfully and prayerfully ‘stay the course’ and answer the question Our Lord posed to the “Twelve”… “Do you also want to leave?”…with the same positive response… “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (Jn 6:67-68). Let us pray daily to Our Queen Mother for the graces to be faithful to her Son. That is what she is there for, and that is what we are here for.

Pope Pius XII officially proclaimed Mary’s Queenship in 1954 with these Opening Words that also seem quite prophetic considering todays crisis… “From the earliest of ages of the Catholic Church, a Christian people, whether in times of triumph or more especially in times of crisis, has addressed prayers of petition and hymns of praise and veneration to the Queen of Heaven. And never has that hope wavered that they they placed in the Mother of the Divine King, Jesus Christ…We see to our sorrow that many great moral evils are being spread abroad in what may be described as a violent flood. Occasionally we behold justice giving way: and, on the one hand and the other, the victory of the powers of corruption. The threat of this fearful crisis fills us with a great anguish, and so with confidence we have recourse to Mary Our Queen, making known to her those sentiments of filial reverence which are not ours alone, but belong to all of those who glory in the name of Christian.”

Pope Pius concluded with perfect counsel for us as regards our current spiritual upheaval: “Let us all therefore, try to approach with greater trust, the throne of grace and mercy of Our Queen Mother, and beg for strength in adversity, light in darkness, consolation in sorrow; above all let them strive to free themselves from the slavery of sin and offer an unceasing homage, filled with filial loyalty, to their Queenly Mother. Our Lady has asked us…and Pope Pius clearly echoed her plea…when he appealed: “May the beads of the Rosary be in the hands of all.” Please accept my challenge to embrace some element of fasting…and the praying of a Rosary (every Wednesday and Friday) to heal the wounds of this crisis in the Church.

Continuing our prayer for reparation, healing, and mercy,
