The 100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima

Next Friday, the 13th of October 2017, will be the centenary of the final apparition of Our Lady of Fatima. In
concert with Miracle of the Sun she promised to the children, that would provide credibility to the words of the three
children. In thanksgiving for, and in honor of, the astounding Miracle, multiple apparitions, and instructive guidance and
protocols to bring about peace and salvation for sinners, we will (in addition to our normal 8:30 AM Friday Mass),
celebrate a special Fatima Memorial Service and Mass at 6:30 PM. Despite the fact that the details of those
remarkable Fatima events are essential for us to truly understand the period of history that we are living through, right
now, far too little is known by the world in general, and by Catholics in particular. Here is a brief description of this, the
most astonishing and widely attested miracle in these modern times (over 70,000 people witnessed it), merely 100 years
ago. Here is an account of what took place immediately following this Miracle of Sun:

“To the left of the sun, Saint Joseph appeared holding in his left arm the Child Jesus. Saint Joseph emerged from
the bright clouds only to his chest, sufficient to allow him to raise his right hand and make, together with the Child
Jesus, the Sign of the Cross three times over the world. As Saint Joseph did this, Our Lady stood in all Her brilliancy to
the right of the sun, dressed in the blue and white robes of Our Lady of the Rosary. Meanwhile, Francisco and Jacinta
were bathed in the marvelous colors and signs of the sun, and Lucia was privileged to gaze upon Our Lord dressed in
red as the Divine Redeemer, blessing the world, as Our Lady had foretold. Like Saint Joseph, He was seen only from His
chest up. Beside Him stood Our Lady, dressed now in the purple robes of Our Lady of Sorrows, but without the sword.
Finally, the Blessed Virgin appeared again to Lucia as Our Lady of Mount Carmel in all Her ethereal brightness,
clothed in the simple brown robes of Mount Carmel.”

This final apparition of the Blessed Virgin at Fatima, directs us to Three Particular Forms of Devotion to Our
Lady. Devotions that we are all called to practice during this “Final Battle” against Satan. And they are: 1. Devotion to
her Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart… 2. The daily praying of the Holy Rosary…and 3. the wearing of the Brown
Scapular. Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary permeates the whole story and message of Fatima. The Angel of
Portugal who appeared to the three children, prior to Mary’s apparition, came to prepare them with these words: “The
Hearts of Jesus and Mary are attentive to the voice of your supplications.” (supplications are prayers or requests). The
Virgin herself, in the second apparition, told Lucia: “Jesus wishes to make use of you to make me known and loved. He
wishes to establish in the world, Devotion to my Immaculate Heart. To those who embrace it, I promise Salvation. And
these souls will be beloved by God like flowers placed by me to adorn His throne.”

Mary’s primary plea to mankind at Fatima, through her messages to the 3 children, was to simply pray a
Rosary every day. Fifteen to twenty minutes is all it takes, and her plea particularly accrues to us Catholics to whom the
Rosary was presented. I encourage everyone to google “Our Lady of Akita”. This was a supernatural occurrence that
has ecclesiastical approval. On October 13, 1973, (the anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima) Sr. Agnes
Sasagawa, in Akita, Japan, heard a beautiful voice speaking from a wooden statue of Mary that was bleeding and crying.
“The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals,
bishops against other bishops. The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their confreres, churches
and altars will be sacked. The Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the devil will press many priests
and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord. The demon would be especially implacable against souls
consecrated to God. The thought of the loss of so many souls is the cause of my sadness. If sins increase in number and
gravity, there will be no longer any pardon for them. As I told you, if people do not repent and better themselves, the
Father will inflict a terrible punishment on all humanity. It will be a punishment greater than the Flood, such as one will
never have seen before. Fire will fall from the sky and will wipe out a great part of humanity, the good as well as the
bad, sparing neither priests nor faithful. The survivors will find themselves so desolate that they will envy the dead. The
only arms which will remain for you will be the Rosary and the Sign left by my Son. Each day recite the prayers of the
Rosary. With the Rosary pray for the Pope, the bishops and the priests.”

And as regards the Scapular, at many funerals, where I knew that the deceased had religiously worn the brown
scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel right up to the moment of their death, I make mention of the promise made by
Our Lady, to St. Simon Stock, that “Those who die wearing this Scapular shall not suffer eternal fire.” Also, Our Lady
promised, that should they die still owing some temporal debt of punishment, she would shorten their stay in purgatory.
This promise is found in a Bull, written by Pope John XXII. The Blessed Virgin had appeared to him and, speaking of
those who wear the Brown Scapular, said: “I, the Mother of Grace, shall descend on the Saturday following their
death, and whomsoever I shall find in purgatory, I shall free, so that I may lead them to the Holy
Mountain of Life Everlasting.” As we celebrate and recall the grace of Mary’s Fatima apparitions and
messages, let us commit to embrace these devotions in our own lives and then share and propagate their
merit to your loved ones as well.

Yours in Christ Jesus through Mary,
