In Support of Life

The inauguration of our new President is complete, and I dare say a new day is dawning. The air is filled with promises and pledges of hope for the pre-born. If you are a committed pro-life warrior (meaning that you have been, at the minimum, vocal about the need to bring an end to legalized murder of the pre-born and the defunding of the world’s largest abortion provider Planned Parenthood), then this is indeed welcome news. I leave at 3:00 AM this Wednesday morning for the March for Life in Washington D.C., accompanying the students from Bishop Snyder High School. Last Sunday, we passed the 44th anniversary of the decriminalization of abortion by the Supreme Court…but… that looks to be the final anniversary. Vice-President Mike Pence has proclaimed “I want to see the day that we send Roe v. Wade to the ash heap of history.” And that is re-enforced by the Republican Party platform, which states on page 13, “We oppose the use of public funds to perform or promote abortion or to fund organizations like Planned Parenthood, so long as they provide or refer for elective abortions or sell fetal body parts, rather than provide healthcare.”

Certainly it has, in the recent past, become quite common for pre-election promises to never materialize, and feigned promises to be ignored and never come to fruition. However, despite the opposition accusing candidate Trump of being a lukewarm pro-lifer (having previously espoused support for so-called “pro-choice”), he has already, beginning on his first day in office, “put his money where his mouth is”, as the saying goes. He had made four “Pro-life Promises”, which were:

-Nominate pro-life Supreme Court justices;
-Sign into law a ban on late-term abortions, called the Pain—Capable Unborn Child Protection Act;
-Defund Planned Parenthood “as long as they continue to perform abortions” and reallocate their funding to other health clinics;
-Make the Hyde Amendment … which prevents taxpayer-Medicaid dollars from funding abortions except in the case of rape, incest, or when the life of the mother is at risk …a permanent law.

Well, in accord with those pro-life pre-election promises, since his inauguration last Friday, President Trump has already signed the order to restore the Mexico City Policy. As pro-life advocates, we should be delighted that the International Planned Parenthood abortion corporation will no longer receive taxpayer dollars to promote or perform abortions in other nations. In his updating of the Mexico City Policy, and along with taking steps to defund United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), a United Nations agency that promotes abortions worldwide, he directed the Secretary of State to implement a plan that expands the policy across all global health assistance funding. This means that taxpayer dollars will not be supporting organizations that promote or participate in the management of a coercive abortion program — like the China two-child policy that includes forced abortions.

So, yes, there is some great news already for our Christian nation, but don’t think for even a minute that the “pro-death” crowd, who are clearly evident in the media and celebrity (read Hollywood) ranks, are going to let this happen without a vicious fight, In fact, the “spontaneous” (read well-funded and planned) day after Woman’s March (with celebrity speakers) took dead aim at the potential defeat of legalized abortion.

So where is this going? I mentioned last week after Mass, and again at Monday’s Roe v. Wade Protest March at the Jacksonville Court House, that while the climate for defeating the Culture of Death has never been brighter in the last 44 years, “it ain’t over til it’s over”. We have been the “silent majority” for 44 years now, and shame on us. We were not just silent on Roe v. Wade, but consider the loss of the right to pray in our public schools. And then, more recently, legalizing so-called “same-sex marriage”, and then, the forced edict (by our President of all people) of complying with the ludicrous transgender “bathroom wars.” We now have positive “words” and platform “language” that is highly encouraging.

Our vote (hopefully you were pro-life) was just the beginning, as it is incumbent on all of us, to become more vocal…to speak up and contact our government representatives… and, in a kind and gentle tone, firmly communicate our strong desire (as their constituents), that they keep their platform promises and remain accountable on these pro-life issues. That is the least that you and I can do. If you saw any of the “Woman’s March”, our enemies are not resting, they are vocal, organized…and…they are angry. And…they have loud and powerful voices, as they dominate communication from the media and entertainment sectors. Victory is within our grasp…but it can be lost by our lack of action. Please commit to write, e-mail, and even place a call… and give your short, life-affirming message of support to your elected official. Politicians tend to react to the loudest voices from their constituency. If you need to know the contact information for your representatives, we will have that printed out for you, beginning this weekend, and it will be on our website as well. Let none of us be guilty of not doing our part, and become pro-active for life with this reasonable request to truly be a “prolife voice” in this battle for those unborn lives that are so precious to our Creator. Here I am Lord, I come to do your will!

Yours in support and protection for all life,

Fr. Denis
